About Food Safety Futures

Food Safety Futures (FSFs) is a small but dedicated outfit of food safety professionals with a background in food safety and regulatory matters in the context of government, industry and consumers.


- FSFs provides the following services:

  • Advice to food businesses
  • Expertise and specific advice to public institutions
  • Training, capability and capability building
  • Support to food safety projects from initiation, over management to delivery
  • Education and mentoring for students, post-graduates and young food safety professionals

 

- based on ample personal experience in the following areas of food safety:

  • ecology and physiology of microorganisms in food
  • microbiology of water used in food production, processing and preparation
  • food safety risk assessment,
  • food safety risk management,
  • food safety risk communication,
  • operational food safety management
  • regulatory aspects of food safety control


- and with a focus on microbiological hazards and risks



Leon Gorris - Food Safety Expert

  • Leon's Bio

    Leon Gorris is a self-employed food safety expert at Food Safety Futures in The Netherlands. 


    He has been providing advice and consultancy to clients on various aspects of food safety risk assessment and management, as well as on regulatory affairs related to food safety.


    Leon has held several jobs at Unilever as department head, food safety risk assessor, risk manager and regulations expert. He worked as a microbiologist and department head at one of the research institutes of the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries. 


    He is the secretary of ICMSF (International Commission on Microbiological Specifications for Foods) and represents ICMSF at Codex Alimentarius and in interactions with FAO and WHO.


    Leon has been providing advice and consultancy to industry, government and public organizations on all aspects of food safety management, including microbiological and chemical hazards in food. 


    He is a member of the FAO/WHO Joint Expert Meetings on Microbiological Risk Assessment (JEMRA; rosters 2018-2022 and 2023-2027).


    Leon is a visiting professor at three Universities in China: China Agricultural University’s School of Food Science and Nutrition in Beijing, Shanghai Ocean University and the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology. He held a part-time professorship serving as the European Chair in Food Safety Microbiology at the University of Wageningen for 10 years.
